Covers up my boot tracks on the way home from my still
Smoke risin in the distance, yonder past the timber line
She's standin at the window of our cabin in the pines

Darkness falls on a winter night
Worries flicker in the firelight
The end is here but it just seems right
that the devil shows his face tonight

That's when I heard a sudden knocking as I drifted off to sleep
Sheriff and his dogs were at my door and I knew they'd come for me
Last night I killed my lovers father, all i could do to save my life
My nose was broken and my face was scarred from his fists and from his knife

Slipped out the back tried to make a run
hounds gave chase sheriff fired his gun
blood in the snow, pennies on my tongue
and i prayed for the life of my son
